"Rio Tinto (RIO LN) has released robust production results for Q2 2016 which were largely in line with guidance. Iron ore production was up 8% YoY and 1% QoQ to 80.9mnt although a drawn down of inventory, built in Q1 2016, meant that sales were marginally higher at 82.2mt, a 6% increase YoY and 7% QoQ. Coal production, however, was a weak point with hard coking coal production down 14% YoY and 9% QoQ to 1.8mt while semi-soft and thermal coal production was up 2% YoY and down 5% QoQ. The variation in semi soft coal and thermal coal production YTD has resulted from a restructuring of the Hunter Valley Operations while the timing of the longwall changeover resulted in weaker hard coking coal production at Kestrel, however, this was expected."

"This was a solid performance by Rio Tinto, as would be expected, with no mishaps and full year guidance maintained. The shares have performed very strongly this year alongside the other UK-listed diversified miners, driven by easy monetary policy in China which has given Chinese industries and notably the construction sector a new lease of life."
